The nose knows: a beagle's superpower
A beagle's nose is one of the finest scent instruments in the dog world. Only the bloodhound and the basset hound are usually ranked above it.
The numbers
- Around 220 million scent receptors, compared to roughly 5 million in humans.
- The part of a beagle's brain dedicated to smell is about 40 times larger (proportionally) than ours.
- Beagles can pick apart individual ingredients in a smell the way we pick out instruments in a song.
Why it matters at home
That legendary nose is why beagles work at airports sniffing luggage, and it is also why your walk stops every three meters. She is not being stubborn, she is reading. Every lamppost is a newspaper, every bush a group chat.
It is also why no snack is ever safe. If it smells, she knows where it is.
